The New York Knicks Are Doing Yoga. Here’s Why You Should, Too.


The New York Knicks are trying to go from being one of the worst teams in the NBA to a playoff contender in the 2016-17 season.

One way they’re getting it done: Yoga.

The team took part in a post-practice yoga session on Thursday, led by trainer Gwen Lawrence, who works with the Knicks, New York Giants, and New York City FC teams. The Knicks were stretching out on the court at the MSG Training Center, trying to do their best versions of downward-facing dog, mountain pose, tree pose, and more:


And while yoga has a (largely unfair) reuptation as a female-centric workout, any pro athlete will tell you that it’s a great way to train—it can increase focus, help you recover from a hard lifting session, increase flexibility, and decrease your risk of injuries. Yoga can also improve your heart rate, increase your range of motion, fight food cravings, and even spice up your sex life.

The Knicks aren’t the only pro athletes to get into yoga: Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James has been using yoga for years, while NFL players like Victor Cruz, Justin Pugh, and Vernon Davis utilize it to stay limber and in shape.
