Tonight HBO will air the first installment of its new sports documentary series, State of Play, from executive producers Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey.
Catch State of Play: Trophy Kids at 9 p.m. EST/10 p.m. PST exclusively on HBO. The film, which is adapted from the Chris Bell-directed documentary Bigger, Faster, Stronger, is a compelling look at the obsession a growing number of parents have with their kids’ athletic activities and development. Immediately following the documentary, Berg hosts a thought-provoking roundtable discussion on the challenges of raising a child involved in competitive sports. Roundtable guests include sports psychologist Dr. Larry Lauer and former NFL quarterback Todd Marinovich, whose complicated relationship with his father is often cited as a prime example of overly aggressive sports parenting.
“We didn’t want to make fun of this extreme behavior, but rather look at why it exists in all of us, and what is says about larger issues in parenting,” says Aubrey, who is also a producer on Berg’s newest directorial feature film, Lone Survivor.
Berg, known in the world of sports films as the director and producer of Friday Night Lights and for his role as “Irish” Terry Conklin in The Great White Hype, got behind the film because of his experience coaching his 13-year-old son Emmett in football over the years.
“It’s about raising the question of how much we should push as parents,” says Berg, who himself was assaulted by an overly-aggressive parent whose son Berg coached on his kid’s football team. “When I saw this documentary, there were extreme cases, but it was hard not to relate to some of the parents in this movie.”
