Rich Froning Wins Fourth Consecutive Men’s CrossFit Games Title

Rich Froning

Rich Froning, the biggest name in the sport of fitness, retired Sunday from individual competition after winning his fourth straight CrossFit Games title at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA. The World’s Fittest Man was hungrier, more aggressive, and completely dominant in the final day of competition. He claimed first place in all three events on Sunday, ending with Double Grace – 60 reps of clean and jerks (at 135 pounds). Mat Fraser of the Northeast region finished second overall and Northern California favorite Jason Khalipa took third.

Froning, who signed a long-term deal with Reebok just prior to the CrossFit Games,  appeared off his game early in the competition and later admitted he had been sick leading up to the event. On Thursday, he was 37th in the Triple 3 event and didn’t place in some other events. “I never really got discouraged,” he said. “If it’s not meant to be, then it’s not meant to be, and it’s someone else’s time.” That someone else will have to wait until next year.

“It’s a blessing that’s for sure, it has been sweeter and sweeter each time. I can’t thanks the fans enough,” said the 27-year-old after winning the title. Froning plans to concentrate on group events next year. “Thanks everybody, it’s been a blast. I am not retiring, I am just switching gears.”

Meanwhile, Canadian Camille LeBlanc-Bazinet won her first CrossFit Games championship after heading into Sunday’s events with a 100-point lead. Former two-time champ Annie Thorisdottir claimed two of Sunday’s individual events and earned a second-place finish in the Thick ‘n Quick event (four 25-foot rope climbs and three 165-pound overhead squats) in her strongest day of competition to come up for second place overall. Julie Foucher followed in third. CrossFit Invictus took the team competition with 935 points.
