Freestyle Wrestling

Age:27
Hometown: Sicklerville, NJ
Weight Class: 74k

The Midas Clutch: With three world championships, a 124-2 record, and a gold medal from London, Burroughs (Twitter @alliseeisgold) is a favorite to defend his title at Rio. But don’t tell him that: “My mindset isn’t to ‘protect,’ but to go and make anew,” he says.

Excellence is a Habit: He focuses on explosive movements—sled pushes, squat jumps, etc.—and relies on an intensive stretching routine to stay fast and powerful. “My training, a lot of times, is harder than my competition,” he says.

Eat Small, Win Big: Burroughs’ nutrition is strict: a coconut-and-greens smoothie for breakfast, fresh juice for lunch, and vegetables with lean protein for dinner. However, after victories he’s known to celebrate with doughnuts and cake.
