Sergio Garcia is flashing back to one of his most iconic moments to get ready for the 2019 PGA Championship at the Bethpage State Park Black Course. To celebrate 20 years of working with Adidas, Garcia will wear a polo inspired by his famous shot on the 16th hole from behind a tree.
As a 19-year-old, Garcia blindly hit the shot and landed it on the green to stay in contention at the tournament behind Tiger Woods. While Woods ended up winning the tournament, Garcia’s shot and his exuberant leap to see where it landed helped put him on the map and announce his talents to the golf world.

When Garcia hit that shot back in 1999, he was wearing a blue-colored Adidas polo with hues of dark and light blue, and now, the company has put together a new polo inspired buy that look. The limited-edition throwback design polo will be part of Garcia’s scripting for the first round of the PGA Championship on Thursday.
The limited-edition polo will be available in limited quantities at the Adidas flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York City, and everyone can find it on the adidas.com website starting May 14 at 8 a.m. PT. Check out the polo here.
Garcia spoke about being with Adidas for 20 years and what it’s meant for him in his career: “You look back, and I was 19 when I started and Adidas made a push for me and I was very excited about it. They’re branded as European and me being from Spain, I always loved them, so it was something special for me,” Garcia told Men’s Journal. “You really don’t see it that often these days—a big relationship with a single brand that goes on for this long. It shows me what they think of me and shows me the effort they’ve put in over the years. This is a brand I’ve worn my whole life. I’ve been a huge fan since I was very little and so to be able to wear that brand and do what you love doing is an opportunity that not a lot of people get.”
Along with the limited-edition polo, Garcia’s scripting for the tournament includes some different versions of the Ultimate365 polo from Adidas. Garcia will be wearing the Ultimate365 Dash Stripe Polo ($75) on Friday, the Ultimate365 Climacool Solid Polo ($75) on Saturday, and the Ultimate365 3-Stripes Heather Polo ($65) on Sunday. All of his outfits will be paired with either the Ultimate365 3-Stripes Tapered ($90) or Ultimate365 3-Stripes ($80) Pants.

With Garcia and Adidas working together for two decades, the company is also releasing a special 60-second video with Garcia speaking about the 20 year relationship and his iconic shot from the 1999 tournament. Take a look at the video here:
“Anytime you can look back and say you’ve had a relationship with an athlete for more than 20 years, that’s a unique moment,” said Jeff Lienhart, president, adidas Golf, in a press release. “Sergio has been one of our greatest creators and we consider him part of the family. We’re wishing him continued success both on and off the course.”
