Rugby is making a comeback in the United States. For the first time since 1924, the sport appeared at the last summer Olympics, and there are rec clubs popping up around America.
So with rugby’s rising popularity in the U.S., lots of reasonably fit guys with a little bit of athletic experience are starting to wonder: Just what does it take to get started as a rugby player?
To find out how to make the transition to scrums and lineouts, I went to the New York City Sevens Tournament and spoke with Ski Bailey, who started playing rugby at the University of Ohio in 2008, and has coached with an organization called Play Rugby USA for the past four years. Bailey stressed that no experience is necessary, but it does help to know a few things beforehand.
