The Battered Bastards of Baseball (2014)
Back before MLB owned every professional baseball team, the United States was littered with independent leagues. One of the last standing bastions of independent baseball was the now-defunct Portland Mavericks, owned by none other than Bonanza sheriff Bing Russell, aka Kurt's dad (Kurt Russell played for the team and was also acting VP). The Battered Bastards of Baseball documents their rise, and ultimate fall at the hands of the MLB, with a story that transcends the game, and the star-power of its owner and son. A Netflix original, the documentary was so well-received, a feature film based on the story is in the works. The adaptation is set to be co-written and directed by one-time Portland Mavericks batboy Todd Field.
