13. Michigan Shows How Not to Treat a Concussion
Brady Hoke was fired as the head coach of the University of Michigan’s football team this year, and a big reason for his termination likely had to do with the way the team handled – or did nothing at all – in response to an apparent injury to QB Shane Morris in September. Morris was decked by a hard hit to the head in a loss to Minnesota, but instead of taking him out of the game and evaluating him after he was clearly dazed by the hit, Hoke and the Michigan staff left him in there. It was later revealed that Morris did suffer a concussion on the play. The incident sparked more debate about the old school way of handling head injuries (see: ignoring them) and putting the safety of a college athlete in peril.
