He’s been on the planet for 80 years, but Donald Sterling lived in relative anonymity for the first 79 years of his existence. Yes, he was the flaccid owner of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and a super-wealthy real estate tycoon, but even that’s not enough to put your name in the national conversation. But spout off racist comments in the supposed privacy of your home that your girlfriend tapes and shares with TMZ, and that will earn you a place on an exclusive list of public enemies.
Sterling’s history of discrimination and sexual harassment bubbled to the surface as he became a household name in April. Less than a month after the Sterling tapes were made public, NBA commissioner Adam Silver banned Sterling for life, fined him a maximum penalty of $2.5 million, and forced the sale of the Clippers to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for an eye-popping $2 billion.
