The issue has been bubbling for years, as far back as the early 1970s, but not until 2014 did the calls for changing the name of the Washington Redskins to something a little less racially insensitive reach a fever pitch, with even President Barak Obama publicly questioning its place in sports. Owner Daniel Snyder refuses to even entertain the idea of changing the name of the team even if it offends Native Americans and originated as a racial slur. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office revoked the team’s federal registration of the term Redskins on the grounds that it is an offensive term. The team’s not doing great on the field, either.Â
