Every spring, Bettman comes out of the tunnel to award the Stanley Cup to the winning team amid a chorus of heavy boos. It doesn’t matter where he is, Bettman hears it from the crowd. That’s what happens when you oversee a league that, following his mentor David Stern’s example, has thinned the talent pool by over-expanding to warm weather cities that aren’t familiar with hockey, and faced three lockouts in 20 years. Some have wondered if any of those could have been avoided if someone other than Bettman was running the league. Beyond labor unrest and the recent mishandling sexist chants during playoff games, Bettman has also presided over a league with a concussion problem, a fighting problem, and a substance abuse problem among some of those enforcers.
