December 13: The Cubs sign Jon Lester to a six-year deal
In Back to the Future Part II, as Marty McFly is running through 2015 flabbergasted by all the technological innovations, there’s a little joke about the Cubs breaking their World Series drought after a century of futility. Some people think that joke might come true. If it does, Jon Lester will be a big reason why. The Cubs handing a contract to a real-life free agent ace is the surest sign yet that they’re planning on contending, and soon. Their line-up is now stocked with young power hitters, their front office is executing a plan, and with Lester, they have a top-of-the-rotation starter. Things get a little shaky after him and it wouldn’t surprise most baseball fans if the Cubs are still two or three years away from a serious run. But at the very least, they’ll be fun to watch, which is something you haven’t been able to say about the Northsiders in quite some time.
