December 14: Kobe passes Jordan on the NBA’s scoring list
Anytime someone passes Michael Jordan on any kind of list (except maybe gambling losses), it’s an achievement worth celebrating. When Kobe Bryant scored his 32,293rd career-point in Minnesota, that’s just what the Lakers did. The game was stopped, bro hugs were had and Kobe’s ascension to third greatest NBA scorer was recognized. The Lakers even won the game, a rare treat for the then-8-17 pushovers who are spending yet another year as the inferior occupant of Staples Center. For most NBA fans, this is fun. There’s no better feeling than watching a historically great team fall on its face. It adds cosmic balance to the world of sports. But even if you hate the Lakers and by extension, Kobe, it’s hard to deny the team and its fans one happy moment in a season so full of suck.
