February 15: T.J. Oshie Single-handedly Takes Down Russia
T.J. Oshie, the 27-year-old St. Louis Blues center, was invited to join Team USA in Sochi largely because of his shootout skills, which immediately came in handy during a group-round game against Russia. Unlike in the NHL, the same player can step-up multiple times during a shootout in the Olympics. That’s how Oshie found himself taking six shootout attempts, making four and almost single-handedly leading the USA past Russia. Unfortunately the USA didn’t medal in men’s hockey this time around, but they did up in the semi-finals, unlike the Russian hosts, which lost in the quarters to Putin’s dismay. So all-in-all, it was a success.
