September 19: Thousands of Ravens Return Ray Rice Jerseys
There are so many reasons to be disappointed by the ongoing Ray Rice debacle that has woven its way through this NFL season, from his punch in the Las Vegas elevator, to the Ravens asking Janey Rice to apologize, to Roger Goodell’s confusing double-speak during the world’s worst press conference. Even Bill Simmons getting suspended by ESPN for having an opinion. But there’s one aspect of this story that isn’t completely awful: the events of Sept. 19, at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. On that day, nearly 8,000 people lined up to exchange their Ray Rice jerseys for that of another player. In sports, too often fans are afraid of turning their back on a misbehaving hero, so it was heartening to see thousands of Ravens fans do just that and tacitly support abused women.
