We’re going to kick things off by saying yoga isn’t just a hobby for girls who wear tight pants and say “om.” (Though we’re betting there will be some of those girls in your class should you venture to one to find out!) The ancient practice has some of the same benefits as a trip to the gym but doesn’t involve all the aggressive grunt work. In fact, yoga is one of the best ways to de-stress, increase flexibility, and boost stability and overall athletic performance (and that’s only a few of the benefits).
There’s a number of different yoga styles you can practice like power yoga, hot yoga, hatha yoga, and vinyasa yoga. Regardless of the type you choose, getting into a downward-facing dog or any number of other popular poses can be quite complex. That said, there’s appropriate attire you’ll need (and want) to wear when it comes to stepping on the mat.
Much of what you wear is based off of personal preference, but there’s some standard fashion rules that all guys will want to follow in order to stay covered, comfortable, and feel supported during each step. For one, loose clothes aren’t the best option; the excess fabric will get in the way, distracting you from the workout. Stretchy clothes, on the other hand, are a must. You’ll also likely be working up a sweat (yes, really) so clothes with water-wicking properties are a plus.
Unlike women, who have had dozens of brands with yoga apparel to choose from over the last decade, men are more limited in their selection. But thankfully, in the last couple of years, a few brands—like Lululemon, Prana, and Manduka—have filled the gap for this need and have emerged as reputable brands with quality yoga apparel for men. We scoped out the best tanks, shirts, pants, shorts—and more—for men on the market, which we’ve compiled on the following 10 slides. Whether you’re a dedicated yogi or a beginner interested in picking up the habit, here’s the top 10 pieces of clothing you need to master your every class.
