We don’t have to settle for the drugstore brands anymore. Sure, there are some great brands out there, and I am not going to say stop using them. Hell, I use them, too. But I’m sure you’ve noticed that women (maybe your mom, your girlfriend, your sister) have access to a myriad of products that combat all of the various skin issues that inevitably arise. Well, luxury companies have seen the lust in men’s eyes and have decided to do something about it.
Here, I’ve picked a few of my favorite splurge products that prove worthy of their price tags. From quick fixes for tired eyes and dull skin to super-high-end fragrances, the following products offer masculine solutions to what were once considered feminine problems. Take a look and follow the links for more information.
L'Occitane - Cade Shower Gel for Body and Hair
Sure, go ahead, use that gel-soap-like substance in that thing on the shower wall at the gym. I dare you. I’m sure whomever came up with that concoction really had the well-being of your skin and hair in mind. If you want to be a little more kind to your biggest organ (ahem, your skin), then I recommend the richly fragranced Cade Shower Gel for Body and Hair by L’Occitane. Composed of moisturizing Shea butter and oils of juniper, cinchona, immortelle, rosemary, sandalwood, and walnut tree, this masculine aroma will stimulate the senses with a purifying zing. A great addition to your gym bag or shower at home, this is a great way to elevate a get-ready-fast routine.
Dermalogica - Face Wash
This stuff is crazy, I love it. It lives in my gym bag and is the easiest way to get a gentle exfoliation on the fly. Instead of a gritty cream or super acidic gel, this gets right to the point. It is a microfoliate composed of Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran and Rice Extract to exfoliate and Papain and Salicylic Acid to dissolve excess surface cells. All that comes in what looks like a seasoning shaker; just prickle a little into the palm of your hand and add water. It’s a no-brainer for the frequent flyer.
NuVsio - Purifying Mineral Mask
Every now and then it makes sense to do a little deep cleaning. Pores get clogged from sweat, forgetting to wash your face at night or a lack of exfoliation. The NuVsio Purifying Mineral Mask by Dr. Elena Brei detoxifies deeply, and its formula doesn’t contain anything artificial or unnecessary. There are no preservatives, mineral oils, silicones, parabens, synthetics or alcohols. This means pure minerals from ancient sea beds deliver a powerful yet refreshing effect. The scent is calming and neutral. Nothing overly feminine or rotten smelling. The results were noticeable for days, whereas most masks leave a lot to be desired after you wake up the next morning.
Perricone MD - Blue Plasma
Now this stuff is wild. Perricone MD is know for its apothecary-like approach. Using ingredients that are not typically found in grooming products allows this line to stand apart. Blue Plasma is a daily non-acidic peel that skips the surface redness, irritation, and damage to skin. After using, skin is brightened and super smooth. It helps leave the skin looking like you just had a great facial, but it does that every day. The peel only gets rid of dead skin cells, which preserves healthy skin and helps accelerate skin renewal. Why is that important? The more cell turnover, the less likely you are to end up with wrinkly or saggy skin.
Sisley - Eye Contour Mask
This is everything. Possibly one of my favorite products of all time, it’s a quick fix for tired eyes that have seen better mornings. As a lightweight gel, it goes on and absorbs quickly. After 10 minutes, tissue off any that remains (don’t rinse) and your eyes are especially hydrated, dark circles look lighter, and puffiness is drastically reduced. Use sparingly following a sleepless redeye, after an all-nighter at the office or if you decided to go out for one more round that lasted a bit longer than expected.
Mario Badescu - Peptide Renewal Serum
This peptide serum is loaded with concentrated ingredients that target sagging skin, lines, and wrinkles. Palmitoyl oligopeptide fights wrinkles, sorghum bicolor stalk juice tightens and soothes, and hyaluronic acid moisturizes. These potent ingredients, combined with green tea, chamomile, and yarrow create a balanced formula to help clean, clear, and even out skin with a penetrating moisturinzing delivery.
Malin + Goetz - Chamomile Treatment Oil
During the winter months, our skin sometimes needs a little special attention to help combat irritating scratchy dryness. Malin + Goetz Chamomile Treatment Oil can handle this task with no problem. Originally created for use during shiatsu massage to encourage lymphatic drainage, it can be used as a daily facial moisturizer for easily irritated or extremely dry skin conditions. It is also great as an after-shower and after-sun body oil or a useful therapy to treat dry hair and scalp as well as seborrheic conditions.
Clinique - Dark Spot Corrector
We have all done it: sun worshiping sans SPF, nicked our face shaving too quickly or picked at a zit that really got to us. We are human, and we can’t all be perfect to our skin all the time. With Clinique for Men Dark Spot Corrector, there is some redemption. This is a serum formulated for men’s skin to treat discoloration. It helps prevent the appearance of new dark spots and visibly break up existing pigmentation as it clusters on the skin. These broken clusters dispense into melanin “dust” that is greatly exfoliated and whisked away. The result: even more radiant skin.
La Prairie - Anti-Aging Emulsion SPF 30
You get your sunscreen from the drugstore and it does just fine. OK, I get it, but hear me out. Once you try this, you will realize why the drugstore brands just don’t quite measure up. This La Prairie Anti-Aging Emulsion SPF 30 not only defends your face from harmful UV rays, but does so while moisturizing in a super light formula that stimulates cell turnover and collegian production. Plumping the skin relaxes existing lines and wrinkles while preventing the onset of new ones. Selfishly, this smooth emulsion blends into my face unnoticed even with two days worth of stubble.
Diptyque - L'Ombre dans l'Eau Eau de Parfum
Diptyque is known for its fragranced candles your girlfriend probably splurges on as holiday gifts. Well, you may or may not know that the same exquisite thought is put into its men’s fragrances. The original, classic, and signature scents of black currant leaves and buds seamlessly integrate with Bulgarian rose, Ambergris, and musk to create a lingering scent that memorable in the best possible way.
La Mer - The Concentrate
I know what you’re thinking – “La Mer!? Isn’t that what my mom spends crazy money on for her face?” Well technically, your mother is probably buying Creme de la Mer. I bet you don’t know the history. La Mer and its base, the nutrient rich Miracle Broth comes from founder Dr. Max Huber’s need to heal his own skin after an experiment resulted in chemical burns over most of his face. Designed for fragile, post-trauma skin on face and body, The Concentrate is formulated with an unprecedented concentration of the original Miracle Broth found in Creme de le Mer. This unique combination of sea kelp, vitamins, and minerals instantly soothes redness and sensitivity while protecting from a wide range of external insults, giving it the ability to focus energy on repair.
Santa Maria - Arnica Cream
Arnica is an age-old homeopathic remedy for sore, tired muscles and sprawling bruises. Coming in both pill and creme form, this plant-derived all natural remedy is a perfect addition to your post-workout routine. The fragrance is subtle yet soothing and won’t make you smell like you left the gym reeking of Ben-Gay which usually means you went a little too hard, and no one likes that.
Tom Ford - Oud Wood Body Spray
This is one of my biggest obsessions lately. You are probably wondering what Oud means. Well, Oud comes from the wood of the tropical Agar tree found primarily in Southeast Asia. When the wood from this tree gets infected with a certain mold, the reaction produces a dark, rich, fragrant resin. This resin, in essence, is oud. It is used in many perfumes for both men and women, most commonly as a strong base note. So, of course, leave it the luxury’s leading man Tom Ford to infuse Oud in something as pragmatic as a Body Spray. This Tom Ford Oud Wood Body Spray is perfect, well, all the time, but especially when you are running out after showering at the gym and need to feel fresh but don’t want to bring your fancy cologne from home in your gym bag. There are quite a few Tom Ford products boasting the Oud Wood fragrance, but if your an active guy who doesn’t like to fuss over your fragrance, keep it simple wight his.
