Sometime in the next month or so, you’ll be pulling the linen shirts out of storage and stuffing those wool sweaters into the back of your closet. Ski hats go into the bin for next winter, and out come the sandals and shorts.
Clothes aren’t the only things that should get swapped out this time of year. The stuff you put on your skin — lotions, toners, and scrubs — also need an update for the summer months, says Caroline Chang, M.D., a dermatologist in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. A change in weather, she says, means your skin suddenly has a whole new set of needs. “As a rule, choose heavier products in the winter, lighter in the summer.”
If your skin seems unusually sensitive this time of year, you’re not alone. “I see more skin issues with my patients during transitional seasons — both spring and fall,” says Dr. Chang. “The skin surface is experiencing the change in temperature and humidity, and it takes some time to adjust.” Here’s how to help your skin get ready for summer.
