We haven’t hidden our affection for Pierrepont Hicks and its stable of sensible yet stylish ties. Now in its fourth year, the Minnesota-based company has been celebrated for its confident, well-defined aesthetic. (Their man, according to their website, prefers “rowing to motors, woodfire to charcoal, trout to tuna.” Noted!) So it should come as no surprise that we were stoked to button and zip up the label’s initial offering of suits, jackets, and pants. Our early front-runner: This unconstructed, light cotton double-breasted blazer.
“It’s a nice shade above khaki and below tan,” says Katherine McMillan, who co-founded the line with her husband, Mac. “It’s meant to be worn with jeans but also a more formal pant.” In other words, button this up anywhere, if only to give your reliable navy sportscoat a rest.
Despite the clean exterior, the brand’s playful side is evident in the details, like the floral-patterned trim on the interior pockets. Think of it as a modern, less neurotic take on the quintessentially self-made, famously pale-suited Jay Gatsby (a look that will doubtless experience a revival following the release of the new film adaptation this May). And if the price has you sweating like an outsider in West Egg, realize that a similar style from venerable Madison Avenue outfitter Brooks Brothers starts at over a hundred dollars more.
