A Raincoat for Clear Days

The Nimbus 3-in-1 is a raincoat that moonlights as a posh city jacket thanks to its simple stylish cut and its buddy-buddy relationship with dark jeans. The jacket’s woven-wool Schoeller fabric shell is an unassuming matte gray, but the pockets are slashed aggressively into sides structured by the scaffolding of the detachable vest layered beneath. The coat is technical, but not ostentatiously practical – it’s devoid of flashy metal accoutrements. The complex coat has the cleanest silhouette we’ve seen and some of the smartest construction.

The quilted vest, buttoned into the jacket, is insulated with PrimaLoft, making the jacket warm enough to fight a cold breeze, but still breathable. Pop the vest out if the weather takes a turn for the better or, more likely, if the weather takes a turn for the worse and you want to throw on a thick sweater. Whatever you do, the jacket won’t crumple or bunch. The sealed seams will keep out the water and the sleeves, which taper toward the wrist, comfortably fit a bit of cable-knit wool.

The real advantage of the Nimbus over similar coats is that you don’t have to add water to justify wearing it. Because it doesn’t have a shiny finish and is cut to look more like a warm-up jacket than a slicker, this coat is good for all seasons and all conditions. [$825; aetherapparel.com]
