A Rough and Refined Flannel

Two years ago, the folks behind San Francisco shirtmakers Pladra set hard to work on a worthy goal: Create a flannel shirt so hearty, it can be worn in the field and then straight to the bar, after getting blood on it. We’ve worn ours in both places – though we managed to steer clear of any blood, so far – and can happily report their quest has been a successful one.

As with any great flannel, there are no bells and whistles to speak of on the Elli: It’s simply great material, expertly hand-sewn, with a perfect fit. (A note on that point: Your new Pladras may seem a bit big when first pulled out of the box, but trust us, they’re built to allow for shrinkage. In our case, one go-round in the washer and dryer made it feel like the thing was bespoke.)

Their lighter-weight Elli shirts come in 10 patterns and colors, though we’re old-school enough to recommend starting with classic styles like Prospect Red or Forest Blue and working your way from there. And just in case the inner dandy in you needs something to show off (you know, down at the bar, after a hard day’s work), simply turn up the cuffs, where you’ll find a cleverly hidden outdoor scene lining that harkens back to beer ads of the Fifties and Sixties. Yeah, we’ll drink to that. [$89; pladra.com]
