Blizzards notwithstanding, now’s the time to pick up canvas sneakers, so you (and your new shoes) will be ready to rock long before the French Open kicks off in May (and before the best stuff sells out). We’ve always been smitten by the clean lines and low profile of Vans Classic Slip-Ons. But now Saturdays, the preferred coffee shop/board depot/magazine publisher of New York City’s surfers, has upped the ante with its understated Mike high-tops.
These lace-ups tip their tongues to their cotton-body-and-rubber-sole predecessors (there isn’t too much room for innovation here), while remaining free of the overbearing brand marks that pollute some competitors. This spring, the Mike and its low-riding colleague, the Jay, were given monochrome appeal in four colors, with matching laces and patterned linings. We like the navy and crimson (pictured), but all four will take you anywhere you want to go – with minimally intrusive good looks. [$95; saturdaysnyc.com]
