An Affordable Preppy Watch

The watch, the cuff link, and, for the fortunate few, the wedding ring, are the only pieces of jewelry a man should wear. Thankfully, a few hundred bucks will buy you a quality mechanical piece, even if it’s not from a famous craftsman like Seiko or Bell & Ross. Case in point: The Classic Oxford from Daniel Wellington, so called because its strap’s color is the same as that of the oldest university in the English-speaking world. It’s paper-thin (6 mm!) and prep to the bone, calling to mind the svelte, ‘Mad Men’–approved paraphernalia at the height of men’s fashion. Plus, to our eyes, it resembles this timepiece from A. Lange & Söhne, one of the finest horologists in the world.

Before you bust out your credit card, a quick word of caution to our fair-skinned friends: Light, rose-gold bezels such as the one on this watch appear rather pale, so if you’re looking for attention, then a strong and stylish diver may be more up your alley. Flat tickers such as the Oxford look their best with a dark suit, but don’t let that limit you from dressing it down with jeans and a short-sleeved shirt. And if the strait-outta-prep-school nylon strap seems too boyish, consider this: Sean Connery wore one, albeit on a Rolex, in the first James Bond film, 1962’s ‘Dr. No.’ Good enough for 007, good enough for us.
