We get it: You’re a supremely sweaty man. Two minutes into a workout and you turn you into a human sprinkler. Hit the heavy bag and you spray everything in a three-foot radius. When you shred the tread, you spatter the monitor. Thing is, all that sweat isn’t because you’re a guy.
In fact, gender has nothing to do with it, according to new research, published in Experimental Physiology.
Some quick science: To prevent a meltdown, your body cools itself off by sweating (duh) and increasing circulation to the surface of your skin. So, in the study, researchers looked at skin blood flow and sweating responses in 36 men and 24 women in two different test trials.
In the first, participants completed light exercise on a bike at 82°F and 36% humidity for 45 minutes. In the second, they cycled in the same conditions, only at a “moderate” intensity.
Interestingly enough, the researchers found that the changes in participants’ sweat rates were about the same in both workouts. Gender doesn’t dictate how much you sweat, but body shape and size do, researchers found.
In other words: It’s not that guys sweat more because they’re guys, it’s that they sweat more because they’re larger human beings. In fact, smaller men and women expel body heat more via increased circulation, while larger individuals cool down by perspiring more.
