How to Steal the Hairstyles From the Best-Looking Men on TV: Harvey Specter

Suits’ Harvey Specter, portrayed by Gabriel Macht, is a man to marvel; he’s got the sharpest style on TV, with a killer haircut—a business-ready modern quiff—to polish it off. If you want to look like Harvey, then we’ve got bad news and good news: The bad news is that the suits and a good tailor will cost you a fortune. The good news is that the hairstyle is almost universally flattering, and it won’t deplete your savings account.

Here’s how to get it for yourself, courtesy of Tony Jimenez, Master Barber at Ludlow Barber Supply in New York City.

Before You Visit the Barber:

To achieve this style, you’ll need to start with at least 2.5 to 3.5 inches of hair on top, and at least one-half inch on the sides. Guys with recessed hairlines can pull this look off, so long as the front middle is still dense.

What to Tell the Barber:

Ask for a scissor cut, specifically on the sides. Leave the top between 2-3 inches. Keep one-quarter or one-half inch at most on the sides. If you have really thick hair, your barber should buzz the sides instead of using scissors. This is because thicker hair won’t lay down when it’s a little grown out. “You have to carve the sides into appearing that way instead of letting them grow out and fold down,” says Jimenez.

Taper around the ears and the back of the neck. Blend the taper into the top with a deliberate side part.

How to Style:

This is all about creating volume,” says Jimenez. “You want to create a higher quiff in the front.”

In towel-dried hair, use a nickel-sized dab of water-based matte clay or pomade. (Anything that isn’t water-based might flake.) Emulsify it evenly through your palms. Then, apply starting from the roots, and tamp the sides. Use a comb to locate and define the part, separating the side from the top.

To get the height in the quiff pompadour, comb the front section of the hair straight down over the forehead. Apply some heat from the blow dryer to set the product. This creates the necessary break in the bang that in turn produces the voluminous quiff. Comb it back, blend it into the rest of the style, finishing with a wide tooth comb to hold everything together without it looking like a comb over.
