Eating and drinking
While most of us give 15 or 20 percent without much thought, Dublanica says. If you’re a repeat customer, go 25 percent or higher now and then. “A waiter will remember you and treat you better: You’ll get better seats and service, and they might tell you about a dish not on the menu,” he says. To go the extra mile, sing a waiter’s praises to the owner. It’s good for both you and the server.
Not Worth It
Contrary to popular belief, tipping a bartender extra generally doesn’t get you free – or bigger, or stronger – drinks, and it won’t help you stand out in the crowd. “If there are people ahead of you, tipping $5 won’t get you a drink any faster,” says Dublanica. “He doesn’t want to piss everyone else off.”
