If you haven’t already heard, this is the summer of Gatsby. Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic 1925 novel hits theaters nationwide tomorrow, and whether or not it lives up to its not-so-great reviews one thing is certain—the revival has sparked a Roaring Twenties trend that’s infiltrating everything from cocktails to clothing. So when your girlfriend drags you to the theater this weekend don’t be surprised if you walk out of there inspired to channel a bit of Gatsby and company’s cool, old-school style yourself.
Luhrmann’s wife, costume designer Catherine Martin, dressed leading men Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Joel Edgarton in hundreds of extravagant ensembles, the majority of which were made exclusively for the film by Brooks Brothers. To give the wardrobe a truly authentic feel, the purveyor of classic American menswear took inspiration from its 1920s archives as well as from F. Scott Fitzgerald himself—the novelist was a big fan of the brand back in the day. And after watching DiCaprio and his screenmates live the charmed life in those expertly tailored suits and accessories you’re going to wonder how you can get a piece of that swank action. Luckily there are plenty of ways to give your closet a dose of dapper right now.
In celebration of Gatsby’s long-awaited release, Brooks Brothers recently launched The Gatsby Collection, a limited-edition line of tailored suits, dress shirts, ties, shoes, and accessories adapted from the film for the modern man. Spring lines at Ted Baker and Ralph Lauren also include modern takes on 20s-era menswear pieces. But before you go suit up in head to toe white with a pocket watch and walking stick remember that you want to go Gatsby in moderation. “The key to incorporating old-world glamour into the everyday lifestyle is to focus on the details,” says Ray Kelvin, founder and CEO of Ted Baker London. “Adding a two-toned oxford shoe or a smart pocket square transports you without going overboard.”
