Would you grow a mustache if—wait, wait, let us finish. Would you grow a mustache if it helped fight cancer? In 2003, Adam Garone asked himself that question—and ended up cofounding Movember, a charity that challenges men to grow a mustache for 30 days to help raise funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer.

“Prostate cancer has the same impact on men that breast cancer does on women,” Garone says. “We were inspired by what women do for breast cancer. Bill Blazey, M.D. explains how to stay a hair ahead of your biggest threats.

A new case of prostate cancer is diagnosed every 2.1 minutes.

PREVENT IT: “Decrease stress in your life wherever you can, and avoid smoking, because tobacco use itself has a direct link to prostate and bladder cancer.

DETECT IT: “Because prostate cancer is typically asymptomatic, talking to your doctor about when a rectal exam and a prostate- specific antigen (PSA) test are right for you is very important. If test results are abnormal, you’ll probably need a prostate biopsy to determine if you actually have cancer.

There will be 8,000 new cases of testicular cancer in 2013.

PREVENT IT: “If testicular cancer runs in your family, it’s vital to be screened frequently, especially if your relative was diagnosed young. If they were diagnosed later in life, environmental causes— like exposure to radiation—may be a factor.

DETECT IT: “The best person to detect testicular cancer is you, via a self-exam. Once a month, in the shower, check yourself to see if you feel any lumps, bumps, or pain. If you do, go right to a doctor.”
