Few materials are as closely associated with summer as seersucker. It’s a lightweight cotton textile woven in such a way that the threads bunch together giving it a bumpy, puckered look. There are a couple big benefits to this. First, much of the material doesn’t actually touch the skin, facilitating air circulation and making it ideal for warm, sticky climates (the material was actually developed by British colonists to deal with the heat in India). Second, because it’s so difficult to wrinkle, it’s perfect for long plane rides or suitcase stuffing.
Seersucker is experiencing a bit of a resurgence on Capitol Hill. Earlier this year, Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) submitted a proclamation to the Congressional Record requesting a designated National Seersucker Day (that would be today, June 11) in which Hill staffers are encouraged to wear the breezy fabric. But the weather is only going to heat up, so we gathered some of our favorite seersucker pieces that will get last you through Labor Day. Just don’t wear them all at once unless you’re going for a Colonel Sanders moment.
