Hockey players are hard-nosed athletes who aren’t afraid to use their bare hands to establish order on the ice. The New York Rangers squad shares this smashmouth mentality, but the guys know how to present themselves off the ice. Case in point: the New York Rangers Casino Night fundraiser for MSG’s Garden of Dreams Foundation, where the team was decked out in designer tuxedos. There we caught up with Rangers star Carl Hagelin to talk men’s fashion. Follow the speedy skaters’ tips on developing your own sense of style.
Men’s Fitness: What are you wearing tonight?
Carl Hagelin: Tonight I’m wearing a tuxedo from J. Lindeberg, a Swedish brand. It started becoming big in Sweden when I was between seventh and ninth grade.
How would you describe your personal style?
A classic European style. I like to wear tight jeans. Most of my stuff is pretty slim fit. We wear suits before and after every game. At a dinner with the guys on the team, I like to wear nice jeans and some desert boots. Growing up in Europe, tight clothing is pretty standard. When I got to college, clothes were loose so I was going toward more loose stuff. As soon as I got back to New York, I started wearing suits 25% of the year. Then, I realized how important it is for the suit to really fit you and be tight. Traveling to different parts of the world—Sweden, Michigan, New York—has helped develop my style.
How many suits do you have?
Between 10 and 15.
How essential is it to have your suits tailored?
It’s key. If you want to look good, you want it to be tailored. It looks so much better on your body. Being an athlete, you work out a lot, and having the suit tailored makes everything look better.
Where do you get your suits tailored?
I get them tailored where I buy them. Most stores can do it or that store will recommend a tailor nearby.
What hair products do you use?
Hair wax is my go to. When it comes to shampoo, I use whatever is at the rink.
Who is the most fashionable guy on the team?
Henrik Lundqvist. He has been involved with different clothing brands for a while, and he has his own style.
What are your essential style tips?
For guys who are into fitness, I think it’s important to wear slim-fit stuff that is pretty tight so they can show off the bodies they have been working hard to have. Women are going to appreciate that.
