Your Sport: Surfing
Problem: Sun- and sea-damaged hair
Solution: A day spent riding the waves is good for many things (your body, peace of mind, farmer’s tan) but it’s hell on your hair. Salt, sun, and marine particles combine to suck out shine, softness, and color. Not to mention the itchy scalp you’ll be dealing with for the next week. You need a shampoo and conditioner formulated especially for people who spend more time in the water than lounging next to it. To wit: Malibu C Swimmers Wellness Shampoo and Conditioner ($15 each, malibuc.com) is the official hair product of the USA Water Polo team. The products are completely plant-derived and sulfate-free, and use a proprietary blend of proteins and antioxidants to rebuild damaged hair follicles. Alternately, if a week at the beach has your hair looking like a bale of hay, you may need to call in the reinforcements. After shampooing, swap your conditioner for a handful of good, old-fashioned coconut oil. It will cling to strands better than conditioner (which has been formulated to rinse off easily), creating an extra barrier of protection. Massage the oil through your hair, focusing on your scalp. Rinse. One final word of advice: There’s no reason to shampoo daily, ever. When celebrating summer with daily or weekly pilgrimages to the beach, an every-other-day or even twice-a-week shampoo is just fine. That doesn’t mean skipping the shower altogether, sorry.
