Don’t let the late-summer heatwave fool you: Soon it will be cold, then very cold. When the first surprising chill of fall hits, the right layers allow for maximum comfort and flexibility while keeping you warm and tying your look together.
“I am a big proponent of layering,” says Alex Drexler, creative director of Alex Mill. “There are countless ways to layer a lightweight sweater, and that’s why every man should own one.”
This uniform essential can come in a variety of styles, fabrics, textures, and colors, and doesn’t necessarily have to appear thin. It can have dimension — just be sure the fabric is light and comfortable. And when in doubt, navy is the universal color.
“Generally, I go by what looks and fits the best. For me, the color is important, but also the feel,” Drexler says. “Is it washed? Is it soft? What’s the texture?”
Pairing a light sweater with a blazer and denim is always a safe bet when layering. It rides that fine line between casual and dressy, and lets you not only transition between seasons, but also from day to evening. Here are 12 to start your collection.
