The amount of content a man brings with him continues to pile up, and a bag has become a much needed accessory as our gadgets, wallets, keys, and other everyday carry items have outgrown our pockets. But with the right bag, everything we need for the day is conveniently accessible in one collected location.
“When you invest in a bag it should be high-quality, handsome, and long-lasting,” says Alex Carleton, creative director of Filson. “Each bag should consider what the everyday is, and be constructed for that.”
“The best type of bag is one you can truly bring everywhere,” adds Byron Peart, co-designer of Want Les Essentiels de la Vie. “From day to night, to the office, and from home to your travels abroad — always consistent, always essential.”
Whether you prefer a briefcase, messenger, tote, duffle, or backpack, be mindful of what works for your specific needs and goes well with the environment you’re in.
“In reality, today’s modern man needs a few go-to bags,” Chris Bray, co-owner of Billykirk, says. Whether you’re heading to the office or beach, the gym, a mountain, or the other side of the world, you need something that’s as durable as you are. “They become badges of honor,” Bray adds. “And walking memories of one’s travels.”
A bag can make or break your look, but it has the same power over a long journey. So if you can only invest in one stellar bag, it’s always best to skip the trends that speak louder than you or your daily uniform. Look for subtle details that draw you in personally, whether it’s by the style, the materials, or the function.
“If you pick the right bag, it’s not going to wear out on you anytime soon,” adds Dan Rookwood, U.S. editor of MrPorter.com. “So you’ll get years of use out of it, which makes it something worth investing time and money into finding.”
