The camera bags that are complimentary with purchase of high-end DSLRs tend to be less than complimentary, so we sought out a shooter’s bag with both functionality and style. There weren’t many, but the Brixton Camera and Laptop Messenger Bag by ONA fit the bill perfectly.
The exterior of the Brixton is handcrafted from full-grain, Italian-tanned leather and waxed canvas, the latter being water-resistant, for a vintage looking over-the-shoulder bag. Under the leather grain and inside the main compartment are soft walls and four adjustable dividers to securely and safely stow a DSLR camera and a few lenses. There’s also a soft divider between the camera and the back of the bag for a 13-inch laptop or tablet to be at the ready. Two front pockets, just under the main flap, provide space for lenses, some sunglasses or extra batteries while two outside side pockets just under the main straps are for quicker access. The two straps that secure the main flap can either be undone with the two buckles or the antique brass tuck clasps can be popped for when we need to capture the moment in the moment. The leather strap is easily adjustable, even with one hand when we’re cinching it up to ride a Ducati. And just under the handle on the back of the bag there is a magazine pocket that has enough room for a couple of notebooks or your favorite magazine.
The fabric’s light wax finish provides protection but also develops a patina that makes the bag look as though it has been in our family for a couple of generations. We like that detail, but we love being able to walk down a foreign street without causing everyone to turn and gawk at the tourist. Makes for better candids. [$270; onabags.com]
