There’s More Workout Clothes Than People Working Out

There’s More Workout Clothes Than People Working Out

The fitness industry has reached a critical mass. Wearing athletic clothing is officially more popular than participating in the sports the clothing is made for, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The findings suggest that many yoga pants enthusiasts choose the addition to their wardrobe for style and comfort more than downward dogs and chaturangas.

“The result is a phenomenon the apparel industry calls “athleisure”—a bright spot in a sluggish business thanks to Americans who are increasingly donning sneakers in the boardroom and yoga pants at brunch,” the WSJ says.

Yoga participation grew 4.5 percent last year while yoga apparel sales grew nearly 45 percent. But Yoga fashion isn’t the only culprit. Guys get to look forward to the next “athleisure” fashion installment. From the WSJ: “For men, retailers are rolling out new versions of jogger pants—sweatpant-like trousers with elastic cuffs at the ankles.”

With some retailing for more than $100, we assume “jogging” is not one of the activities recommended when donning this elastic-cuffed fashion accessory.

By 2020, the WSJ reports the athletic apparel industry will gross $100 billion. As people’s fitness wardrobes expand, here are ways to put that clothing to work with Men’s Fitness’ 101 best workouts.
