Shwood has been making wooden sunglasses since 2009, when founder Eric Singer whittled a piece of Madrone tree branch from his neighbor’s yard into a pair of rugged wooden shades. Today, the Portland, Oregon-based brand operates a factory that employs more than 50 skilled craftsmen who cut and assemble each pair of shades by hand.
Now, the brand is adding another material to its lineup: metal. The new Fifty/Fifty Titanium Collection combines the brand’s signature hardwood temple tips with sleek, silver-gray titanium frames. The combination makes for sunglasses that are sleek, outdoorsy, and masculine.
Shwood’s creative director Taylor Murray is candid about the expansion, conceding that wooden eyewear has a limited audience. “We’re trying to fill out a new market,” he says. “We’ve been doing wood for so long…. We realized that wood sunglasses just aren’t for everybody, so we wanted to translate them into something more fashion-forward and edgy.”
The specs are made of walnut that is sustainably sourced in Oregon, Italian Carl Zeiss lenses, and German-engineered titanium hinges. They’re available in several frame options, including Shwood’s classic square Canby and the larger rectangular Govy 2.
