Last year, when designer Todd Snyder introduced a wildly popular line of wool Yankees caps with the hat makers at New Era, he immediately started getting questions from customers and baseball fans: Why not the Cubs? Where are the Red Sox? Can we get one for the Giants?
So this year, while planning another New Era collaboration, he wanted to deliver. “It really became about the people we got requests from,” he said of the limited edition offering, which is available in Todd Snyder stores and online today. In addition to the aforementioned teams, there are also caps for the New York Mets and both the L.A. and Brooklyn Dodgers.
“Who knows?” he added. “Maybe next year we’ll add Cleveland.”
Snyder’s work has always referenced sports in some way (one of his lines, Tailgate, sells modern takes on college team gear), but these hats are inspired more by the way people wear baseball caps than by America’s favorite pasttime itself.
“It was more about street fashion. That was the influence for me,” he said. “With all the stylish artists and musicians wearing baseball caps, they’re almost like the new fedora.”
And this line of caps has a lot in common with fedoras: each one is made from wool supplied by Abraham Moon, a storied British mill that turns out some of the best menswear fabrics in the world. Marrying suiting style with sporty headgear might not seem like the most obvious pairing, but the results are undeniably slick. And as it turns out, the one Snyder likes most out of the line is kind of the perfect combo.
“My favorite one this amazing chalk stripe we did for the Yankees,” he said, predicting it’ll be the first style to sell out. “It’s just friggin’ awesome.”
Each cap will go for $78. You can get yours, while they last anyway, at toddsnyder.com. A look at a few of our favorites below.
