Air Jordan VIII
By the Air Jordan VIII, Nike’s confidence had gradually become hubris, and like Icarus, the corporation’s famous Jumpman logo flew too close to the sun. The VIII was a baroque monster, layered in so many design innovations, it looked like the actual shoe was hidden somewhere under a pile of discarded prototypes. The crisscrossing support straps harnessed the upper like it was attempting to bungee jump, and the design elements — from the carpeted tongue to the abstract etchings on the side — seem depressingly dated.
