New York City, New York
With miles of public parks, tracks along waterfronts, hundreds of fitness centers and even watersports like rowing and kayaking, New York City is a fantasy destination for athletes (particularly basketball players) when the ice melts. Come springtime, the basketball courts of Gotham spring to life, each with their own vibe: Dyckman Park, where pros have played; The Cage in Greenwich Village, which always draws a crowd; Brooklyn Bridge Park, with its jaw-dropping views of downtown Manhattan. While many courts require a fee and/or permit, joining in on a game in progress is not uncommon. If you want to take the game indoors, check out Indoor Hoops, which is serious about organized games, as well as the courts at Chelsea Piers. Book a stay at Thompson Lower East Side, which is steps from the ABC Playground Courts on Houston, one of the easier spots to reserve a space.
