Federal Hill, Rhode Island
Most Like: Italy
With a trickling fountain and cobblestone roads lined with planters brimming with vibrant flowers, Depasquale Square in Rhode Island’s historic Federal Hill evokes images of one of the many vibrant piazzas in Rome. The rainbow-colored buildings around the square hint at structures you might find at Burano island in the Venetian Lagoon. Italians first arrived in Federal Hill in the 1870s, with a second wave of immigrants who moved here in the early 1900s. Today, you can sip cappuccinos at one of the sidewalk cafés and listen to live music, or shop for imported olive oils, antipasti, cheeses, wine, and house-made pastas.
