Leavenworth, Washington, had thriving sawmill and logging industries until the 1920s, when the Great Northern Railway was re-routed and bypassed the town. Leavenworth’s economy struggled until local businessmen came up with the idea of rebranding the town as a Bavarian village in the 1960s.
