Iowa might be the last place you’d expect to experience “a touch of Holland,” but the small town of Pella brims with Dutch charm, especially during springtime when tulips bloom all over the city. From Molengracht Plaza, which surrounds a replica of a Dutch canal, you can see a working Vermeer Windmill that still grinds wheat into flour. Several times a day, you can hear the town’s Klokkenspel play to the chimes of 147 bells. Jaarsma Bakery has been baking butter cookies and the S-shaped Dutch Letters since 1898. Just outside of Pella, you can take a tour of Frisian Farms Cheese House and sample their stellar Gouda cheeses.
