The Garland (North Hollywood, CA)
The Garland’s proximity to Universal Studios should explain its rich Hollywood history: The lot’s seven acres were originally owned by Gene Autry, who trained his horses here. In the 1970s, it was purchased by developer Fillmore Crank, who built an onsite hotel for his wife, actress Beverly Garland. Through the years, it played host to everyone from Dolly Parton to John Wayne (and rumor has it that Kurt Cobain proposed to Courtney Love here). Today, Fillmore’s son James is determined to keep that legacy alive by reimagining the hotel with a $20 million renovation aimed at recapturing the spirit of its retro past with a totally boutique makeover set to make its debut early next year.
