OK, so the German economy is doing juuuuust fine, but one great thing about a weekend in Berlin is that the city remains affordable, despite being one of the most visited cosmopolitan places in the world. Beer is often cheaper than water (even at nightclubs, where the only steep expense is a cover charge), and you can buy a bowl of phở or a kebab platter for five Euros (and either will fill you up). If you want to stay in an Ace-like hotel without breaking the bank, then go to Michelberger in Friedrichshain, a 3-star hotel with the pulse of a 4. It always has a cool crowd filling its lounge on evenings and weekends. You’ll be walking distance to the East Side Gallery, one of the city’s many outdoor monuments and memorials.
