Steer clear from any place that gets a #springbreak hashtag, as well as the past-its-prime Tulum, and you’ll never have to glance at the menu prices (assuming it’s not some expat-populated, schmaltzy place in San Miguel de Allende). Either way, we’d posit that two people could fly, stay in a nice hotel, and eat like animals for a four-day weekend in Mexico City—and still spend less than $1,500 total. Tacos are cheap (yet the best in the world), tequila and mezcal are close to the source, and avocados are as fresh as can be—and a fraction of what we pay after importing them. If you want to see more than Mexico City, try Guadalajara, Guanajuato, or Oaxaca City, or head to the coast of the Oaxacan state, to the remote virgin beaches of Puerto Escondido.
