South Africa’s economy is at a low. With exchange rates favoring the US dollar 15 to 1 (and counting), it’s an ideal time to visit and take your inaugural safari or explore Cape Town and Johannesburg. Cape Town itself is expensive by comparison to the others, so plan your budget accordingly (in this sense, treat it like a mid-range European capital). If you want to see the countryside and sleep along the coast, just rent a car for as much as you’d spend on buses, and head to a 4- or 5-star hotel for less than $75 per night. You’ll wake up to ocean blues, and no budget blues.
