47. Zurich, Switzerland
Why you should go: Zurich is Switzerland’s portal to the Alps, with numerous ski regions (like Flumserberg and Sattel-Hochstuckli) accessible by public transport. Spend the winter months perusing the picturesque Christmas markets, skiing, warming up over fondue, and taste-testing Swiss chocolate (someone’s gotta do it).
Why it’s a steal: Flights to Zurich go for a median airfare of $670 from December through March, while the average nightly hotel rate is $229.
Where to stay: Since the ‘70s, the Helvetia has been a hangout for the arts and literary set (the lobby is basically an art gallery). The hotel was revamped in 2017. They added a new wing in an adjacent building, bringing its room count up to 37. Rooms start around $190.
