6. Atlanta, GA
Why you should go: Without summer’s oppressive heat and humidity killing your appetite, you can really dive into Atlanta’s food and drink scene. Savor the Atlanta Winter Beer Festival in January or the Uncorked Atlanta Wine Festival and Oysterfest in February. And if you head down even earlier, catch the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl at the still-new Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Why it’s a steal: Flights to Atlanta are about 26 percent lower than the median airfare for North American flights, dropping from an average of $240 in December to $186 in January. And the median hotel room rate stays under $200 throughout both months.
Where to stay: The Glenn Hotel, built in 1923, was Atlanta’s first boutique hotel (and it was once former Confederate Major Hamilton Goode’s home). Today, as part of the Marriott Autograph Collection, it delivers on upscale Southern charm.
