27. Omaha, NE
Why go: The name “Great Plains” inspires visions of flat land as far as you can see—but there are plenty of trees, as evidenced by the red, orange, and yellow hues spreading outward from Omaha in the fall. Platte River State Park, just 30 minutes away, is a great place to get a peek at some midwest foliage. And with temps in the 70s, it’s still warm enough to raft down the Elkhorn River while spotting moose, bison, and wolves at the Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park & Wildlife Safari.
Where to stay: Local landmark Hotel Deco is situated in the heart of downtown Omaha. Formerly known as Redick Tower, what was once a 1930s office building is now an 89-room luxury hotel. Make sure to warm up at Monarch Prime and Bar with hearty dishes inspired by the nearby grasslands.
