32. Adairsville, GA
Why go: The entire town of Adairsville, tucked into Georgia’s Oothcalooga Valley, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In October, don’t miss the Great Locomotive Chase Festival, a three-day celebration remembering the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862, one of the best known escapades from the Civil War (there’s a Disney movie of the same name).
Where to stay: Barnsley Resort, an 1840s estate, covers 3,000 acres, and takes full advantage of it by offering tons of fall-appropriate hiking. Wind down at the end of the day with a drink on your cottage porch or at the outdoor fire pits.
